So
consumed are we by our individual lives that we forget that we are all one
thing. This one thing has been likened
to a spider’s web.
As
philosopher Alan Watts described it, “Imagine a multidimensional spider’s web
in the early morning covered with dew drops.
And every dew drop contains the reflection of all the other dew
drops. And, in each reflected dew drop,
the reflections of all the other dew drops in that reflection. And so ad infinitum.”
In
Zen this is called ji ji muge, the mutual interpenetration of all things and
events. In Vedanta, it is called
Brahman.
